Don Papa’s Art Prize
”The idea was to get inspired by the Negros Island where the sugar canes, used to produce Don Papa’s rum, are cultivated. I decided to paint the Kanlaon volcano using the feminine figure, knowing that in french a volcano is masculine. I wanted to celebrate the strength of femininity while drawing the lines of a magnificent active volcano surrounded by a primary vegetation and cultivated areas. Little I knew that the volcano is named after the supreme goddess Kanlaon and that when people look at it from far away they see a feminine body with the second volcano behind it (I too painted a “second volcano” as a shadow/cloud without knowing this fact)”
